Summer of Horror and other fun things

[personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange revealed today! I got an astonishing 15K(!!!) Biggles fic (!!!) which I won't be able to properly start reading until tomorrow, but I cannot WAIT, it looks amazing and I'm dying to read it!

Obligatory reminder that I have a fic in the exchange as well. Deeply mysterious, hid my tracks amazingly as usual. And there is a lovely selection of other horror fic as well!

Earlier today, before all of that, I posted yet another Murderbot TV-verse fic, System // Handshake (2500 wds, gen, post-canon). Summary is spoilery for the finale; it's loosely springboarded off another fic I'd read earlier.

There's also this seriously adorable short interview with the whole Murderbot cast (link goes to Tumblr) in which they talk about playing the Bitter/Sweet game from the show on the set. HOW ARE THEY SO CUTE, I DIEEEEEE

And, longer and more serious, but I really enjoyed watching this David Dastmalchian interview; he talks about the show, as well as some of his other projects (Dune; comic book writing) and is so adorably excited about the show and invested in it.

The highest and sharpest mountain

The neighborhood is hosting the 18th annual BurgerFest, where you can get burgers made of gator, ostrich, bison, boar, lamb and virtually anything else you want. Gingko is madly obsessed with it, not just for the free smells and opportunities to make chaos, but also for the adoring masses who all want to know what kind of dog she is and remark on how chill she is. That is a ruse; she is a criminal mastermind and is straining to just go apeshit and devour all the display burgers on counters and the plates of fries little kids are pulling behind them in wagons.

It is making both of us wildly overstimulated, though, and I've spent the whole day trying to grab enough time to write down some thoughts on a show I started last night. It's called Our Generation, and I was only going to watch it because the leads are both fantastic — they have fabulously intense, deliriously delightful chemistry both in real life and in their previous project, The Princess Royal. I love a costume drama, but I don't so much care about youth dramas, and I fully expected this one to be sort of sentimental and sloppy, to be honest.

That's my prejudice against the genre. It's — incredibly moving, beautiful and unsparing. Everyone just calls her Cherry. )

It's on Netflix, for those who don't have Viki. I've only seen three episodes, but it's made a huge, strong impression on me. Even if you don't like youth dramas or realistic shows, this one already seems many cuts above. It's also only 24 episodes, versus the usual 40, so it's not as heavy a lift. I will be watching it for a while, probably, and thinking (and hopefully writing) about it for a long time.

A good grade

One of the LED bulbs in the bathroom vanity developed a distracting (which is code for sensory nope) flicker. Since the porch fixture takes the same bulb, I proposed that the ailing bulb become a public nuisance rather than a private one.

One of my oncologists (I believe I have dubbed her Dr. Bitsblobs, the oncology gynecologist) is retiring soon. So she has been bidding her patients farewell. Apparently I am a "gold star" patient in terms of trying my best to comply with medical advice, and for self-advocacy. A good grade in cancer, something that is normal to want and possible to achieve.

House Items and Cast Finally to Come Off

I have felt good enough starting last weekend to finally start trying to get caught up on everything. The cast doesn't come off until Monday, but I've started working on my IMDT course (Learning, Motivation, and Reinforcement). I think considering I'm in the cast I did pretty solid. I posted to social media some of my first dog-walking client's photos and video. I'm less worried about that because I'm not really trying to become a 'professional' and more of just a hobbyist that maybe gets enough work to subsidise my dog sports with my own dogs.

I finally pulled the wallpaper stripper out and I've removed almost half the wallpaper in the sitting room. It will need a lot of cleaning down further. The floor's a mess - I wasn't worried about the 50-year-old carpet. My plan is to get hard floor installed anyway, preferably a pet-safe flooring. I'm thinking recycled netting for the carpet by Sedna. It'll take ages because I'm waiting until I can feel confident I can install it myself (I am consistently doing more of the housework than Patrick, which I expected, but so far that is including house modifications. It's irritating when I have something like a broken bone going on, but then, I've been borrowing money from the shared account while I'm struggling to cook. I did way better than when I broke my humeral head but I still get tired and irritable trying to cook and clean so I've been eating too many take aways.)

Anyway, that's okay because we're going slow. For this room my goal for now is:

1. Get the walls stripped of wallpaper and clean the walls.
2. Update the sockets in the sitting room - I want to get double sockets with USB connection.
3. Repaint (technically we also want to replace the doors and frames, and install shutters. But extra paint will let us fix that later.)
4. Media wall/bookcase.

Rinse and repeat for the entryway, stairs and landing (except we will want to be moving the entryway - installing a frame/door so the burner room and kitchen are together. That way when we convert to heat pump or GFCH or whatever, we can turn the burner room into a utility/dining area.

Then we'll be doing it for each room. Patrick's room is more urgent because the wallpaper and plaster situation in his room is not looking good (and his closet area needs TLC.) I basically just need to remove the wallpaper, update the sockets and light fitting, get shutters in. When we've converted to Heat Pump or GFCH the water tank will be removed. Then I can turn the wall by the door into a bunch of additional closet/storage space.

I am so desperate to get this cast off.

Terrible Temperature Flash authors were revealed this evening, and I wrote two not at all predictable fics:

A Touch of Warmth (Biggles books, Biggles/EvS, 1000 words)
This was entirely for the mental image of Erich wrapping his coat around a chilled Biggles. ♥

Taking the Heat (Babylon 5, Vir & Londo gen, 2500 wds)
Londo gets heatstroke on Centauri Prime. This was a treat for the h/c of it all.

Really crappy book club aesthetics posting

I should have taken a few pictures of Caitlin Starling, I got her at the worst moment. Also, my cell phone could not handle the deep colors and it didn't focus in that one shot?

Oh well. Maybe someday I'll proper book club aesthetics post.

The event was fun! I barely got the book done in time. She talked about her upcoming vampire novel and also what the sequels to a few books would be like if her publisher greenlights them. Part of why I grabbed pics is because when I say 'it's a bar that's a converted house' people often seem confused by that idea. We have a decent number of bars like that here. Book club gets the second floor when we are there. IDK if this is just a Portland thing, but yeah, houses make good bars.

...I could have made like an actually really nice mood board if I'd used my real camera, but bringing that would have been a bit much

- As mentioned, I signed up for [community profile] battleshipex. I guess this was a good decision(??), becuase I've now written 8400 words across six fics in the past six days. That plus an impulsive art piece meant I capped out for board 1, which feels like absolute crazypants. I hope I like the fics okay when I go back and edit them...

I might be a little burned out now. If my team reaches board 2 before I leave for my trip, then maybe I will feel like writing a couple more things, but if not, that's also fine. I've more than doubled my participation the other year I played, so!

- I continue to play Cult of the Lamb. It's so fricking cute. I've beat the main boss and am now indulging in the extras like sending my cute followers to the mating tent where they make eggs that hatch into more cute followers. My only complaint is that the music is extremely repetitive, just one samey jingle for the home base and another for combat.

- The Oasis tour has started, and I've been trying to avoid hearing too much about it, but I DID have friends sending me tons of photos and videos from the first couple of nights, and they hugged?? Noel CRIED????? They walked out together, and Liam took Noel's hand and lifted it like he was a prizefighter? Have I mentioned Noel CRIED.

The first gig was July 4, which meant I was getting all this at the same time I was trying to be social at a cookout.
Me on the outside: So you finished that degree? Congratulations!
Me on the inside: OH MY GODDDDDDD THEY HUGGGGGGED.

I peeked at the forum around that time, and everyone there was absolutely euphoric. Cannot WAIT to see it all for myself! SOON.

Yay, I'm not anemic anymore, though I've still got another 3 months of iron supps ahead of me. I had a psych appt today to confirm my meds are still doing their thing. Boo, I'm temporarily off the rhodiola rosea and back on Adderall for the next month (because rhodiola hasn't been safety tested for long-term use). cut for mention of weight loss )

yay!
As has been posted everywhere, Murderbot is getting a Season 2! That means ART! \o/ I haven't yet caught up with the last few eps of S1, but I'll get there in due time. (Viewing, such a challenge when I'm on a reading kick. And when I'm NOT on a reading kick. Sigh.)

yarning
I went to yarn group Sunday and had a really nice time. Great turnout, and it's good for me to see human beings in person. Pain in the shoulder, though. I want my crochet arm back! But I met a few new people, including one young woman who also has Ehlers-Danlos. So cool to commiserate in person.

natural disaster: Texas floods
My parents were finally able to leave their ridgetop and run errands, though all the intact bridges are missing guardrails (at minimum). One of them was completely surrounded with gear and detritus from the kids camp upriver. So heartbreaking. Thankfully, their POA jumped right on finding engineers and requesting bids for repairing their main bridge & its banks, and the low water crossing is sound, now that it's clear of downed trees. I am still so sad about the catastrophe, even though I'm not directly affected. Camps were a safe space for me when I was a kid, and though they were in a different part of the state, it's all too easy to imagine the worst happening.

kitty
[youtube.com profile] KittenAcademy has moved to Pennsylvania and is searching for a new rescue/shelter to work with in the Bethlehem/Allentown general vicinity. If you know of one that is willing to provide pregnant momcats and manage adoption apps, please let me know so I can pass it along to them. ION, the family of black cats and kittens who had been living part time in my backyard are no longer around. I hope they got scooped up by a shelter and/or TNR'd somewhere safe.

July 17: Good Trouble Lives On protests/marches tomorrow. If you participate, please think of me & everyone else who would like to march but can't.

Note: Mercury stations retrograde tomorrow, July 17, at 15*34' Leo (and stays retrograde until August 11 at 4*14' Leo). I'm curious what that will mean for the protests. At least they're on a Thursday, so maybe that will help keep people safe amid the likely miscommunications.

I hope all of y'all are doing well! <333

Two Brief Murderbot thoughts

That I haven't seen anyone else mention.

ONE.
I like that they cast an older actor. AS is closing in on 50, and it might be a Hollywood 50, but he looks like he's seen some miles along the road. It makes things hit different than if they'd cast a thirty year old who looked like they just hatched. I know they compressed the timespan in the show, but in the book it'd been something in the range of four years between when it disabled its governor module and the start of All Systems Red, plus however long it'd been enslaved before that, which it doesn't even really remember. Which I think is better represented by someone with some lines around their eyes.

TWO.
Nenya speculated about if they were going to do the later books (and I think they'll do three seasons to cover the first four novellas, combining Artificial Condition and Rogue Protocol into the second season, and then call it a day), and if so, if we'd see the ship from System Collapse. I'd been thinking that, actually, mild spoiler for System Collapse )

* Oh, right, Caitlin Starling is going to be at our horror book club meeting. I really, really need to get The Death of Jane Lawrence read. No wonder I had her on my 'get these authors read' shortlist.

* My bookclubbing has been very disorganized

* I watched the start of a Lady of the Library video. I don't want much of her content, but one on book reccs interested me, because reccs are such a bugbear for me. At the start she talked about her local book clubs fall for online reccs and says she shows up only for snacks and social contact, but wouldn't waste her precious time ever reading the books. I was surprised to see her proclaim that so proudly. People like this have been a problem at my bookclubs. They show up for social contact and free food, but not only have they not read the book, but they had no intention or interest. Not reading the book because the month got away from you, fine. But... literally no interest and there to leech? Know why we've got such nice spaces and other things for the clubs? Local bookstores are covering the costs . And people are like 'oh, y'all have the nice steampunky bar at Kennedy School that was made out of the old boiler room and cake and people to bother to refill my social meter' Like, fuck off, y'all're literally crowding us out of some spaces, and driving off the people we want to interact with.

Also, hot take but as much as I think booktok trends are typically terrible, I like reading what people are reading if it's making reading social. Unless I have an objection to the book, I don't care if it's a bit crappy. I mean, it's not an issue with my book clubs and honestly I think for me it's a great way to ~break free of the algorithm~ and get better reccs, but even if it wasn't, like if you want to be part of a thing be willing to at least have a little buy in to what's going on. If you don't want to expend even a drop of emotional energy or time, maybe at least fucking pretend to not be that person?

* Guild Wars 2 News: Tyria Pride once again smashed fundraising records for Rainbow Railroad. Love to see it. Also, in 2024 I spend half a year farming legendaries for it and my donation was the majority of the most hype prizes and also did a big dono. This year, I didn't/couldn't do either. So, it was nice to see it thriving even without me.

* Breaking Guild Wars 2 News: The new expac was announced today and... the website didn't go live in time and when it did it was half in English and half in French. Also, the morning patch notes spoiled stuff before the announcement. It wouldn't be ANet if they didn't have a bunch of tech issues with announcements.

H/C Exchange

Authors have revealed!

I wrote: everybody's on the run, Cuckoo (2024), Ed/Gretchen and Gretchen & Alma, post-canon, 2k. This fic was a surprise. I matched on Creator's Choice of Fandom, which meant I could write whateverfandom I wanted, and fresh off finishing my 20k Re-Animator fic, I planned to write more Re-Animator. I came up with several ideas, managed to write a solid 1100 words on one, and just completely stalled out. Instead I wrote this entire fic on the day of the deadline.

I think it turned out okay, though! I enjoyed this movie so much when I saw it earlier this year, especially the messy worldbuilding, and the ending is very wish-fulfillment, I feel, for a certain kind of viewer (which I guess I am, lol). It was fun to try to imagine what the immediate aftermath of everything might look like for these three.

Meanwhile, I received: You, Me, and the Serum Makes Three, Re-Animator, by [archiveofourown.org profile] psychomachia. Dan/Herbert, mpreg, 3k. Absolute galaxy-brained way to knock Dan up, A+. Just a very fun series of relationship development and pregnancy vignettes.

I'm back to save the universe!

I AM 41.

I AM EMPLOYED.

I HAVE A NEW BIKE.

For real!!

So much has happened!! Things are very good right now! Kpop Demon Hunters holds up well the second time you watch it! Gingko defended me/picked a fight with three asshole dogs behind a fence and is very proud of herself and her battle scars! I am publishing a story either this week or early next week that will make absolutely everybody mad, so I need to figure out how to protect myself on social media! I was finally able to BUY NEW BRAS and I hope they fit???

But yeah... yeah! Birthday last week was really excellent! I have a full-time job now, and it started last week! I have been sleeping so much since that started, just because I think I've been holding a decade's worth of stress about where my next paycheck is coming from and now I just... get to stay. (It is journalism and it is public media, so no, the guarantees are not 100%, but it's an amazing group of people who absolutely adore me and I'm on the softball team and I tested out my biking commute yesterday and it is less than half the time it takes on public transit! Imagine getting more than 15 years of workplace trauma healed with one gig that appreciates you and fights for you!)

I'm just very excited about things now. I'm watching a lot of decent/fun TV (mostly cdramas; League of Noblemen, A Dream Within a Dream, The First Night with the Duke, The Blood of Youth). I finally deep-cleaned and organized my kitchen so that I'm able to cook again, which I did this weekend, hurrah! My DnD party is confronting our Final Boss, and my beautiful dumbass tiefling monk took down the first of the three dragons we'll be fighting. Summer in Chicago is very, very good! I am eager af to make art and write fiction and play music again! Do all these exclamation points sound deranged? I'm just. Very happy right now, and I will ride it out as far as I can! ✶
