Follow Friday 8-15-25

Got any Follow Friday-related posts to share this week? Comment here with the link(s).

Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die".

Add me??

Name:Sami

Age:30's

I mostly post about:A little of everything I guess.

My hobbies are:Writing, Reading

My posting schedule tends to be: Pretty sporadic.

When I add people, my deal breaker is:If you're only reaching out when you need something, and never reciprocating support or interest in what's going on with me.

Before adding me, you should know: Nothing really. I like to think I'm a pretty laid back person. I'm a good listener and I'd be happy to meet some new people here.

WorldCon has Loaded (ISH)

They seem to have fixed the technical issues (*knocks on wood, scratches a stay, turns around three times*) and I have gone to several panels! Both a virtual one of Nigerian authors and a filmed one of an in-person panel.

ETA: Both 10:30 panels I want to see either not streaming or not with sound.

ETA2: Caught the back half of one 10:30 panel (idk if the other one ever worked), and the sound was back for most of the noon panel, though it dropped out completely ten minutes from the end. Folks attending have been amazing with posting running notes to the discord, linking to works mentioned by the panellists.

Shine

This is a serious historical BL show from Thailand, very different from what I usually see in Thai and other BL shows. The trailer alone is amazing. I really want to see it, but so far the only option seems to be a Thai streaming service and IDK if it's subtitled and it wants me to pay via a phone QR code. I am really, really hoping this gets put out on other distribution because it looks amazing.

Battleship!!

I signed up for Battleship this year, my second time, knowing that I would leave for vacation nine days in. That seemed fine, since I figured eight days of Battleship would probably be enough for me, and then I burned out in six days. šŸ˜… Still, I received some things and I wrote a bunch of things, and as always the team atmosphere was very fun. I'll put the stuff I wrote in a different post.

Things I received:
no alarms and no surprises by [archiveofourown.org profile] ElasticElla, Suspiria 2019, Susie/Madame Blanc, 800 words. A trippy little post-canon piece, and the one gift I received for one of my requests.

Dirty Water by [archiveofourown.org profile] darkrosaleen, Jaws/The Witch crossover, Martin Brody/Thomasin, 900 words. I got offered this in DMs (as someonetimes happens in Battleship), and the combo was so wild I couldn't resist.

Wrist Day by [archiveofourown.org profile] Nary, Letterkenny, Jonesy/Katy/Reilly, 1.5k. A very silly PWP with the humor and voices of the show, which I adopted when it was offered up on discord (as also sometimes happens in Battleship).

What I'm Doing Wednesday

books (Hodgson, Greene & Arroyo, Rudhyar, Tyl, Gillig, Al-Rashid. Abulafia) )

yarning
I went to yarn group Sunday and learned one of our members is moving away next week. That is sad. I finished sewing together a bunny and started a new one, and my shoulder didn't protest too much, so that was a nice surprise. I finished the eyes and faces of 2 bunnies yesterday and need to take photos and list them. It felt good to be crocheting again.

healthcrap
I'm so worried about my parents and various other things that it's affecting my sleep. I always have trouble getting into Deep sleep, and lately the fitbit is registering single digit minutes in deep, and I've been having stupid insomnia. I need probably to start doing yoga nidra again, but I'm blocked about it for some reason. Like I'm blocked about Yoga and Pilates. Except that is at least partly due to it being so damned hot. There is little I can do about the things I'm stressing over, and yet. It's so frustrating. cut for discussion of weight loss )

house
I've done a fair bit of cleaning/chores today to counteract the worry. And hopefully the insomnia.

WorldCon 404 Not Found

So technical issues have taken out the Seattle WorldCon streaming platform, all recorded panels didn't get recorded, and no streaming panels are currently being broadcast. (Apparently some of the earlier streams happened? I missed them.)

The first half a day just got wiped out.

So glad they committed to expanding the virtual experience due to people not being able to attend for Politics reasons. It's off to a flying start.

ETA: It did start working about half way through the fourth panel slot.

ETA2: Panel slot five has video but not sound.

ETA3: No audible sound on the Martha Wells q&a. Giving up for the day.

ETA FOUND!!! Tony injured and trapped....

Posted by pfyre

ETA-found! See comments below for link.
------

It was an older fic – I don’t recall if it was on AO3 or FFN…. Tony and the team were on a mission – unfortunately I don’t recall the circumstances of the mission other than it might have been somewhere in Europe. Tony was doing his Iron Man thing – helping and taking care of baddies. Something happens and he is ā€˜dropped’ or ā€˜falls’ down a crevasse or something similar. He’s pretty badly injured and trapped in a very difficult place to rescue him from. I think that JARVIS was still operational and after some effort manages to contact Cap and the rest of the Avengers…. I think….
.
Bruce and I think it was Cap – manage to finally get to Tony but they cannot remove him from the underground caves/caverns easily. I think they used the Iron Man armor to act as a ā€˜compression suit’ (help stop or slow internal bleeding) and to act as a ā€˜stretcher’ to get Tony out of the caves. Some areas are very tight not even easily passing the suit through much less have Bruce or Cap accompanying him.
.
They finally get him to an area where rescue services can then help get him the rest of the way to medical help. I’ve tried a few searches but there are so many MCU/Avengers stories out there I haven’t found it. Any help – pointers, ideas and/or links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help.

FF:FS timeline thoughts.

Not sure if anyone else here is into this movie. I'm picking away at the sex pollen fic, but I haven't written fic in long enough that it was slow going the first few days, and now I'm afk while visiting my parents (elder millennial has not warmed to writing fic on phone). Meanwhile, I'm trying to work out the latest backstory.

It's been long enough since I read any F4 comics that I read the wiki to remember the origin story (since the movie just summarises it). The following is a vague stab at a timeline?

No real spoilers )

Thoughts? Corrections? Anyone just want to talk about the movie?

Appointment Week

I have:

* 3 appointments tomorrow, all remote (for later today versions of "tomorrow", because I rarely get to sleep before midnight)
* 2 appointments Wednesday
* Only one appointment Thursday, but it looks like a doozy
* The morning primary care adjacent appointment on Wednesday got scheduled today (Monday) by using the magic combination of phrases "my oncologist said" and "new lump"
* (it's probably a ganglion cyst, since I have a history of those going back to the 1980s)

And then I managed to drive myself to Pained Noises & a complete lack of energy today by:

Weapons

I saw people say that hearing anything about the film will spoil it and it's best to go in cold, so I decided to actually see a movie in a theater. Also, if i am going to go to a theater, a hundred degree day is a good choice.

Minor spoilers, and I don't actually think this movie is as easily spoiled as I'd heard. )

Murder in the Trembling Lands (Ben January #21)

Working on belatedly writing up some books I've read lately.

A new Ben January book came out in July, and I had tremendous fun with it! This is one of the books in the series where Hambly goes Full Pulp with the plot, and she is delightful at it - buried treasure, pirates, abandoned houses crumbling in the swamp, identity shenanigans, long-lost relatives ...

OASIS CONCERT

On July 26 I saw Liam and Noel and the rest at their second night of five at Wembley Stadium in London, which has a capacity of around 90k and was completely sold out.

So much more. So much. )

So yeah. Great concert, absolutely mind-blowing tour, my ship has gone from "will they ever speak to each again" to NIGHTLY HUGS AND HANDHOLDING. Everything about this reunion has exceeded my wildest dreams.
