Wow, I really fell down on that posting meme. I'm going to try to go through it all and just finish it as I come to it, because there were some good questions on there, but Christmas really devoured my complete attention. Enough so that I only remembered today that I needed to renew our health insurance by the end of the month, whoops. but that's done, so yay.

But really, that pretty much sums up how the entire year's gone. It's been a pretty hectic year, and not one I enjoyed, frankly. There's been a lot of upsets, starting right at the very beginning of the year, and still on-going. Since Christmas and yesterday, my nephew's condition has apparently declined, but I've not heard much more beyond that. I'm on standing watch for his big brother to come over here to give his parents time to cope, though it hasn't happened yet. I take that as a good sign.

The neck surgery my uncle had in October was not as successful as it had originally seemed either. He's having problems with that again. And I'm not complaining about it, though as a perfect end to the year where nothing went right, Robin Hood will be spending our tenth anniversary babysitting. My brother called me freaking out yesterday, because every other option is out of town all week. We've shuffled our plans a bit, and will go see our movie in the morning, probably take the baby to dinner with us, and have more or less tossed out the idea of doing anything else. This is what getting old is like.

But it's the end of the year, so I want to talk a bit about goals. I have a few, both grown up and hobbyist.

  • Be in a house by June. This is the big one. We've been saving up and paying off old debts all year, and are at the point where we'll be able to seriously start looking in February.

  • 365,000 words written. I tried it this year, and actually got pretty damn close, all things considered. My spreadsheet lists 204,027 words as of today. There's no way in hell I'll get even close to the goal, but 200,000 words isn't exactly chump change either. Even though I fell short, I'm still very pleased with my overall word count, as it's the highest it's been in years.

  • Finish Trickster God. I've been working on it for ages. I want to be done.

  • Minimise ongoing WIPs. I've started trying to keep with a posting schedule within the last few months, and I find it helps me keep on top of them, but I don't want to deal with having to keep on top of so many. I'm going to try to adopt a stance of only posting once I've finished, or am close enough to finished that I can complete the fic before I'm done posting. I really like the WIP way of posting, because I like the back and forth with readers, but it really wears me out sometimes.

  • Get better at saying no. I agree to too much, both IRL and online, and it needs to stop.

  • Get better at recognising the difference between friends and mutual followers. I put myself under so much stress this year, not wanting to upset mutual followers whose posts constantly upset me. I need to get better at knowing when to hit the unfollow button, and not care so much about doing it.

I think all of these are attainable, though some probably more unlikely than others. The first one is the one that is going to really be stressing me out, and will undoubtedly impact all the rest. But getting it accomplished will also clear up so much stress in my life, which is why it's number one.

I've pretty much been ingoring DW lately, save for a couple anon memes, but I'm done with Tumblr. At least for a while. I was getting sick of seeing posts about self-care right next to posts shaming people for wanting certain politically charged posts to be tagged so they can be blocked from showing up on the dash, often from the same people.

Recent months have basically proven right every criticism I've ever had about the site. The only reason I even gave in and went to tumblr in the first place is because that's where fandom had migrated, and now all of my favourite fandom blogs are gone. The accounts are still there, but many have been inactive for weeks for the same reason I mentioned above. Tumblr is not fun anymore. I can't block out the things that make me physically ill, and I get shamed for wanting to block them out. I want to separate my fannish area from my news and politics. Even though DW is slow and all but abandoned, it's less stressful than tumblr by a mile.

I have a huge hole in my hand, given to me by a polesaw. Earlier today, I got conscripted into helping fix this mangled up old tree in the back yard, which is mangled because once upon a time, it was a plum tree and an apple tree, but now it is some horrible, fused-together plum-apple bastard. It makes horrible, inedible fruit, and has three times in the last month decided that it no longer wants to hold its own branches up.

It looks really cool, but it is a complete pain-in-the-ass tree.

And not only did my mother drop a very large branch on my face, leaving me all cut up and irritated, but the cord on the polesaw slipped and tore a very large piece of my hand away. So I'm sitting here, unable to really use a few fingers on my left hand at all, because the bandaging gets in the way of bending. (I'm absolutely fine, and was never in any real danger of losing any fingers, even if it did seem like it for the first few seconds. It's just a very bad, very deep rope burn.)

The most interesting part was when we gave up on the polesaw and the branch cutter and got out the chainsaw. It seemed like for every branch that needed to go before it broke on its own, we had to cut down two more because it was all a tangled mess. Eventually, we got bored with this, and decided to find a chain and pull everything down with the lawn mower. Which worked great, until the mower ran out of petrol. We may have stolen some from one of the race cars in the garage, shh.

And now Grant is annoyed, because for the third time in a month, there's a massive pile of branches that needs to be throwin into the wood chipper. Which, I'd say is preferable to having them break on their own and falling on the lodgers in the back yard.

In other news, I found my glasses last night. Grant had taken them, which meant we were both miserable and blind all day. Whee!

Got my new tablet in today. It's amazingly huge and I love it. My sketchbook is 9x12, so it shouldn't be too much different to draw with, but it is. It's only the active area of the tablet that's 9x12; the whole thing is actually quite a bit larger than that, and now I'm just sort of not sure what to do with it all. Also, up until now, I've only ever purchased Graphire/Sapphire tablets. This is the first Intuos I've ever purchased. But since I'm really rough on my tablets, I've got a whole bunch of extra pens, which I've hitherto kept as spares, because traditionally, that's the bit people tend to lose or break. Not me! Only, they don't work with the Intuos. So now I've got a bunch of spare pens. I'll keep them anyway, because I'm awful with tablets and will run this one into the ground, hopefully much later than sooner. I don't share desk space with Robin Hood anymore though, so that should help it stay alive longer. I may also try to track down a spare stylus or two, just to be safe.

Speaking of desk space, there are some new developments there as well. I've purchased a wifi adapter for my computer. Actually, I went on a huge retail therapy spree last night, and feel much better for it. For a few reasons. First: whee! new stuff! Secondly, it means I can move my computer OUT OF THE COMMON AREA. Robin Hood and I talked briefly about it, and once my adapter gets here, we're going to move his computer to the spare room, and mine back to the bedroom. This is because there's not a whole bunch of room in the area I've set up as my bat cave, and my computer is twice the size of Robin Hood's. It also means I can move all my art and crafty stuff back there permanently, instead of having to camp out at an uncomfortable desk every time I knit something off a pattern. It ALSO means I can start that porny fanart blog I've been wanting to start, but haven't because drawing porn in the living room was just a big no.

My shopping spree last night was made possible by a small Amazon gift card balance I'd forgotten I had. In addition to the wifi adapter, I also got some new floss and fabric for cross-stitch projects. I'm going to attempt to finish the one I've been working on, but I've managed to miscount the stitches again and it makes me want to cry. I may just quietly forget about it and start something new. IDK.

So there's my week. I now get to spend the next few days anticipating the arrival of parcels, which is always fun. And not even in that snarky sarcastic way.

Also, THOR 2 TRAILER AAAAAAAAHHH!!
loki_of_sassgaard: Harry Lockhart covering his eyes in frustration with "*Facepalm*" written over top. (This is exhausting)
So, I only go back into the bedroom to sleep, because otherwise Robin Hood's in there being a hermit. He takes most of his meals in there and only leaves to go to his gaming nights on Tuesdays.

I've just pulled three bags of trash from under the bed and around his desk. I'm banning food from the bedroom. I'm banning beer from the bedroom. He can have a drink back there so long as when he fetches it, he brings out his empty soda can. The man's nearly 30. This is disgusting. At least the mess on my desk is all magazines and Post-it Notes.

I'm still not done back there either. I wanted to move the bed because as it is, it's blocking the door. It was set up as a guest-room, but as a long-term bedroom, it's not set up well. But I may need to wait until Robin Hood gets home to do that bit. I'm already exhausted from just cleaning the floor and his desk.

At least I finally found all the missing socks. They were all shoved under the bed behind his wall of trash. :|

Current word count:

No estimate this time, because it's all typed. I did, however, go quite a bit over my estimate. lol whoops.

New since last update:

4048 / 3300
(122.67%)

Now I just have to give it to my beta. That process always seems to add a few hundred words, so the total count may wind up just a touch under 50k.

For the hell of it, I'll be doing some number-tracking for my AU series. I'll try to do it probably not every day, but at least ever few. A lot of these will be estimates, as I hand-write my first drafts, and don't get final counts until my beta's gone through and beaten everything with a heavy stick.
